A brief description of the data.

The Weybourne Atmospheric Observatory (WAO) is part of the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA). It is situated on the north Norfolk coast and is a world class facility for fundemental research, background atmospheric monitoring and teaching purposes. WAO operates a range of instruments in its measurement programme - the data from which is archived at the BADC. The WAO has also been the focus of many international experiments designed to into the chemistry of the planetary boundary layer and free troposphere. WAO is an NCAS facility.

Introduction

The Weybourne Atmospheric Observatory (WAO) is part of the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA). It is situated on the north Norfolk coast (52°57'01.5"N 1°07'19"E) and is a world class facility for fundemental research, background atmospheric monitoring and teaching purposes.

WAO operates a range of instruments in its measurement programme - the data from which is archived at the BADC. The WAO has also been the focus of many international experiments designed to into the chemistry of the planetary boundary layer and free troposphere.

Availability of data

A range of meteorological and chemistry parameters have been recorded by the instruments at WAO. The Weybourne dataset contains data from these instruments from April 2002 to the present. Data are added monthly as they become available.

Meteorological data include

wind speed, wind direction, humidity, atmospheric pressure, solar irradiance and net irradiance

SoDAR wind profiler data

sonic anemometer data

Chemistry data include

ozone, carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen

gas chromatograms for measurements of VOC's and GHG's (Volatile Organic Compounds / Green-House Gases, respectively)

In addition, cloud condensation nuclei measurements are available.

The data are stored in the BADC Weybourne data archive in Nasa-Ames format. Additional measurements made as part of dedicated measurement campaigns based at Weybourne Atmospheric Observatory are stored with the individual project datasets - see project links below.

Access Restrictions

Access to the data is restricted to UEA staff and users designated by the WAO data manager for two years from the end of the month of measurement. After this time the data is available publically with the caveat that the data source, i.e. WAO, must be cited in any work using the data, and that the WAO data manager must be contacted before undertaking any studies using the data.

To apply for access to the WAO archive:

You will need your BADC username and password.
New users register here. For a reminder of your login details contact the BADC Helpdesk.
Apply for access to the Weybourne data archive. You will need to agree to the Weybourne conditions of use and your application be approved by the Weybourne data manager. This may take a few days to complete.

Users of the data are reminded of the requirement to contact the data provider prior to using the data, and to cite WAO in any publications resulting from work using the data - even after the data have been made publically available.

A secure project workspace, accessible by FTP, has been set up for use by WAO participants to facilitate the exchange of documents and preliminary data files. Please note this is separate from the data archive and validated, formatted data files should be subsequently be submitted to the ARCHIVE in the normal way.

To gain access the FTP-project-space you will need to be registered with BADC (See 1 above) and

apply to the WAO FTP project space and be authorised by the project management team.

The workspace can then be accessed by FTP to ftp.badc.rl.ac.uk directory project_spaces/wao_ps.
For help with FTP see the BADC FTP guide. Access to view and download files may be obtained via your web browser using the URL ftp://username@ftp.badc.rl.ac.uk (you will be prompted for your password) however to upload files you will need an FTP client.

Projects related to Weybourne Atmospheric observatory

WAO was the location of one of the TORCH (Tropospheric ORganic CHemistry experiment) measurement campaigns -part of the NERC Polluted Troposphere (PT) directed mode programme. Other PT projects (Ions and OVOCs and NMHCs) also used the Weybourne site during this experiment.
ACSOE (Atmospheric Chemistry studies in the Ocean Environment)
INSPECTRO was an EEC funded project that used WAO as a base.
