Introduction
The
Berlin stratospheric data series
contains temperature and geopotential height
data on the 100, 50, 30, 10 mb pressure surfaces produced at the Meteorological Institute, Free University of Berlin,
from radiosonde data and rocket observations.
The data covers the northern hemisphere during the years
1957 to 2001 and is available on both a 10° x 10° and 5° x 5° grid.
This data series is fully documented and contains remarks on summer, winter and annual trends and variability of the
data, climatological monthly mean temperature and geopotential height at 30 mb, and intercomparisons
with other data series. There are also sections on the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and the global signal of
the 11-year sunspot cycle in the stratosphere.

The Berlin Stratospheric Data are public, but please cite the creators of the dataset as given below.

Both the data and the software to read the data have been transferred from the original CD provided by the Meteorological Institute of the Berlin Free University onto the Berlin Stratospheric Data Series archive at the BADC, from which they are readily downloadable. The archive also contains the documentation in HTML and PDF formats, and the individual figures inserted in the documentation, as GIF files.
Data availability and file format
Prior to 1973, the Berlin analysis charts were sampled onto regular gridpoints manually. Therefore, all data prior to this year are available in a 10 to 10 degree horizontal resolution, and cover the northern hemisphere northward of 10 degree north only. At 80N, values are only sampled in a 20 degree longitudinal resolution. Later, the interpolation onto gridpoints was done by a computer, allowing for a horizontal regular resolution of 5 to 5 degrees. In addition, the analysis was extended to the equator. To keep compatibility to the earlier data format, the 10 to 10 degree format are still maintained; however, it is now just a subset of the the higher resolution data.
Please note the following points:
- Geopotential heights are stored in gpm, temperatures in degree Celsius.
- Each monthly mean or daily field is stored in an individual file.
- All fields cover the northern hemisphere only.
The data are held in ASCII files. The README file indicates how the data are formatted within the different types of files within the archive.
