Introduction
This dataset contains over 14 years of polar Arctic and Antarctic aerosol profiles obtained with the Stratospheric Aerosol Measurement II (SAM II) satellite experiment. The SAM II instrument, aboard the Nimbus 7 spacecraft, measured attenuation of solar radiation by aerosol particles during sunsets and sunrises.
For each measurement event, vertical profiles of extinction km-1, extinction ratio, and NMC temperatures and pressures are provided as a function of altitude. Separate files containing the NMC temperatures and geometric altitudes on the standard pressure levels are also included.
The data coverage begins in October 1978 and extends until January 1993.
The data are archived at the NASA Langley Research Center. This data is a copy of the NASA CD-ROM.
Restricted Data Access
The data are held on CD-ROM at the BADC and are available for browsing purposes. If you want to use the data in earnest you should order a copy of the CD from the contact listed below. Please ensure that you comply with the Langley DAAC Conditions of Use for this dataset.
Data availability and file format
All of the data in this dataset are stored as ASCII text. The data are subdivided into directories for each year. Each file within these directories contains a month's data.
Documentation and Links to further information and references
The documentation on the CD-ROM is available in the README file and is made available through this interface.
References
The primary reference for the SAM II data is the SAM II data users guide Chu et al, 1988, NASA Reference Publication-1200.
We have also listed a number of other references which you may find useful.
