Introduction
Ocean properties estimated for 1998-2007 from SeaWiFS/SeaStar Level 3 data. Dataset produced by Takafumi Hirata, Plymouth Marine Laboratory, Plymouth, UK as part of NERC Programmes: Centre for the observation of Air-Sea Interaction and fluXes (CASIX), National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) and the MarQUEST project in Quantifiying and Understanding the Earth System (QUEST).

Data availability and file format
The data are in NetCDF format.
SeaWiFS ocean properties data available through the NEODC archive include:
- SeaWiFS Plankton data - Monthly Phytoplankton Size Class (Micro, Nano, Pico) for 1998-2007 estimated from SeaWiFS/SeaStar Level 3.
Data estimated from SeaWiFS/SeaStar Level 3 data using Hirata et al. 2008 algorithm. The size classes are:
- 0_land
- 1_no_satellite_measurement_eg_cloud
- 2_picoplankton
- 3_nanoplankton
- 4_microplankton.
Data are available both as monthly means and for each year and as a monthly climatology.
- SeaWiFS Inherent Optical Properties data
Monthly Inherent Optical Properties for 1998-2007 calculated from SeaWiFS/SeaStar Level 3
Data calculated from SeaWiFS/SeaStar Level 3 data using Smyth et al. 2006 algorithm. The variables are:
- volume_absorption_coefficient_of_radiative_flux_in_sea_water
- volume_backwards_scattering_coefficient_of_radiative_flux_in_sea_water
- volume_absorption_coefficient_of_radiative_flux_in_sea_water_due_to_phytoplankton
- volume_absorption_coefficient_of_radiative_flux_in_sea_water_due_to_dissolved_organic_matter_and_detrital_materials.
Monthly climatologies, at wavenumbers 412,443,490.510, 555. Version 1.0, last revised 04-Aug-2008

Who to contact
If you have queries about these pages or about obtaining the SeaWiFS ocean properties data from the NEODC then you should contact NEODC Support. Your query should be answered within one working day. When follow-up work is required, the NEODC support will carry out the work as quickly and efficiently as possible, and in any case, the user will be kept informed of progress.
