Introduction
The Polluted Troposphere Programme is a 5-year NERC thematic research programme which is centred upon the study of polluted boundary layer air and its transport to the free troposphere. The programme focusses on the regional scale, defined as intermediate between urban and hemispheric. The Polluted Troposphere programme started in 2001 and will end in 2006. It has run a single round of awards, through which six projects have been funded.
Transport and mixing in fronts is a NERC Polluted Troposphere Research Programme project (Round 1 - NER/T/S/2002/00149 - Duration 2002 - 2005) and is led by DR SL Gray, University of Reading. The aim of this research is to provide improved quantitative estimates of the rate at which frontal regions in weather systems transport polluted air from the boundary layer to the free troposphere. Modelling studies performed using typical mesoscale to regional-scale resolution cannot resolve certain frontal mixing processes which are clearly visible in high resolution radar observations; namely multiple shear layers and large-amplitude Kelvin-Helmholtz billows. We propose to perform very high-resolution (of order 2 km by 90 vertical levels) model simulations of frontal cases using the new dynamics (nonhydrostatic) Met Office model. The dynamical representation of these mixing processes and the transport and mixing of passive tracers in the model will be evaluated using observations. The climatological impact of these individual fronts will be determined using a climatological frontal database. Data Access

Measurements, Availability of data and file format
Data from the Transport and Mixing in Fronts project is available to users subject to the terms and conditions of the Polluted Troposphere Data Protocol which aims at encouraging rapid dissemination of scientific results while simultaneously protecting the rights of individual scientists. For these reasons, access to the data is initially limited to Polluted Troposphere project participants only. If you are a Polluted Troposphere project participant and wish to apply for access to the Polluted Troposphere data, please apply for access here. The data are stored in Met Office PP format. Users are requested to contact the project PI prior to publishing any work based on or using this data.
