CLOud Processing of regional Air Pollution advecting over land and sea (CLOPAP) is a NERC Polluted Troposphere Research Programme project (Round 1 - NER/T/S/2002/00147 - Duration 2002 - 2005) led by Prof. Tom Choularton, University of Manchester.

Introduction

The Polluted Troposphere Programme is a 5-year NERC thematic research programme which is centred upon the study of polluted boundary layer air and its transport to the free troposphere. The programme focusses on the regional scale, defined as intermediate between urban and hemispheric.

The Polluted Troposphere programme started in 2001 and will end in 2006. It has run a single round of awards, through which six projects have been funded.

Ionisation as a precursor to aerosol formation.
Advanced GC-MS technology for observing OVOCs and NMHCS in the polluted troposphere.
Aircraft Measurement of Chemical Processing and Export fluxes of Pollutants over the UK (AMPEP).

CLOPAP is an aircraft measurement campaign using the FAAM BAe-146-301 aircraft to make measurements of the ageing of the London plume in the cloudy boundary layer. Measurements will be made of the evolution of trace gases, aerosol and cloud properties. These will be supported by modelling studies. The flights were scheduled to take place between March and September 2005.

Measurements, Availability of data and file format

The flights took place between May and September 2005. With an additional flight in September 2006. The dataset includes

Data from the core FAAM instruments. For a description of these instruments see the details on the FAAM web site .
Data from non-core instruments fitted for the campaign including the UMIST aerosol mass spectrometer, gas probes and particle physics instruments.

Data collected for this project can be found in the Polluted Troposphere data directory.

The data are stored in NetCDF and NASA-Ames formats. Filenames follow the BADC filename convention.

Users are requested to contact the project PI prior to publishing any work based on or using this data.

Access Restrictions

Regarding conditions of access to this dataset, the procedure is slightly different in the case of data from core instruments from FAAM BAe-146 aircraft campaigns. For a description of these instruments see the details on the FAAM web site .

Processed BAe-146 core data are publicly available. If you would like to access these data, please refer to the FAAM application procedures. Access is granted automatically once you have agreed online with the FAAM Conditions of Use.
Access to raw Bae-146 core data is restricted to FAAM staff and scientists involved in test flights. To access these data, please refer to the FAAM application procedures.
