Secure SHell (SSH)

To access our linux server machine, login.badc.rl.ac.uk, you will need to use an SSH program. Telnet and rlogin are not supported for security reasons.

SSH stands for Secure Shell, a program to log into another computer over a network, to execute commands in a remote machine.

SSH is a program very similar to Telnet.The difference is that SSH uses encryption to keep the connection secure so that it is more difficult for hackers to spy on users password or other sensitive information that may pass through the connection.

If you have a shell account, then either: you need to download and install an SSH client program onto your computer, as described below; or you can connect directly from your web browser from this page which uses a Java-based client.

If you use a PC, please download and install PuTTY.
If you use a Macintosh computer, you will want to use NiftyTelnet.

Both applications are available for download below.

NOTE: If you use a Unix Operating System then you probably already have 'ssh' installed. Typing 'man ssh' will display the manual pages if ssh is present on your system. If ssh is not installed, talk to your local system administrator about installing it. You may also check the software provided at http://www.openssh.com/portable.html

Putty (Windows SSH Client)

PuTTY is a free SSH client for use with computers running Windows. It supports both SSH1 and SSH2 protocols. You will not need to run a separate installation program.

NiftyTelnet (Macintosh SSH Client)

NiftyTelnet is a free SSH client for use with computers running MacOS.

Note: NiftyTelnet supports only SSH1 connections. For SSH2 connections, use MacSSH.
