How the BADC Works
This page gives a quick overview of how the BADC operates. The main objectives are to store
data for NERC programmes and to distribute that data to the science community to do
research on. To accomplish this the BADC partitions the data into datasets. Both the people
supplieing the data and those takeing the data are discribed as users. There are two types
of user anonymous users and registered users. Most of the information and a lot of data is
avaliable to anonymous users, but the conditions of use for many of the data sets prohibits
anonymos access. Once users register thier details with the BADC they can apply for access
to the other datasets and t
Datasets:
A dataset is a colection of data files, documentation and information which natrally form a
unit. This is not a rigorus definition, but the idea is to form units of data and
information that can stand on thier own and thus be simply managed. For example,
- Data from a NERC funded programme.
- Data from an operational research instrument.
- Data from a numerical weather prediction model, run in a particular mode.
- Data from a satalite instrument.
- Data from a satalite instrument at a particular level of processing.
The factors defining the bounderies of the datasets include: level of homiginaity,
conditions of use, funding source and the long term use of the instrument.
The conditions of use of many datasets require that the use can be tracked. This means that
the user must be registered and that the appropriate conditions of use have been agreed too.
