Ported Unified Model Version Software from the Met Office

January 2010:Discussions have re-started with the Met Office in an effort to resolve issues regarding access to the PUM code.
June 2007: Due to proposed changes to the Met Office Ported Unified Model licence it is not currently possible to apply for access to this software.
Information will be added to this site when the new licence is available.Apologies for any inconvenience.

Introduction

This dataset contains current and previous versions of the Ported Unified Model Software (PUM) from the UK Met Office. This allows the Unified Model to be run on a user's own system. The archive may also contain community contributions associated (such as the RPM for version 4.5).

The current model version is 6.1 and this is supported by the Met Office. Note that versions 4.5 and older are no longer supported by the Ported Unified Model Manager at the Met Office.

The Unified Model is the name given to the suite of atmospheric and oceanic numerical modelling software developed and used at the Met Office. The model supports global and regional domains and a wide range of temporal and spatial scales that allow it to be used for numerical weather prediction as well as a variety of related research activities. This software allows the Unified Model to be run on a user's own system. More information detail about the Ported Unified Model is available on the Met Office PUM web page.

Please note that this is the MODEL SOFTWARE ONLY, not the UM model output, which is located at http://badc.nerc.ac.uk/data/um/

In December 2005 the management of all PUM versions was consolidated into one dataset with separate license agreements for each version. This is to satisfy the Met Office's requirement for tracking usage of the PUM as well setting limits on support for each version. The license is currently timebound for a three year period from the application date.

Restricted source code

You cannot currently apply for access to the source code.
This information is for advice only.

Access to Met Office PUM source code at the BADC is restricted to UK Academic Researchers only. Non-UK researchers must apply directly to the Met Office for access to the code.

The application for access to the Met Office Ported Unified Model Software must be undertaken for each version of the code that you require. Upon applying for access to the code you will be required to print and sign two copies of the PUM application form which should then be sent to the Met Office PUM Manager at the address indicated. If the PUM Manager has received the application and instructs us to grant you access then the you will receive an e-mail detailing how you can access the PUM code.

If you wish to apply for access to a previous version of the PUM then please contact BADC Support with details of why you require an older version of the code.

Access to the source code

The PUM source code is stored in the software directory beneath /badc/ukmo-pum/software/ . Each sub-directory contains a version of the PUM code. You will only be able to access the code for versions that you have been granted permission to access.

If you would like to receive the data on CD-ROM or DVD formats then please contact BADC Support (restricted to users who have been granted access to the code) after you have been granted access to the code.

Documentation

Detailed documentation about the PUM is provided with the source code.
