EAQUATE

* Introduction

The EAQUATE (European AQUA Thermodynamic Experiment) project aimed at validating radiances and level 2 products from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) grating spectrometer aboard the Aqua satellite. The project included two phases. The first phase took place in Italy and used the Scaled Composites Proteus aircraft as well as a range of ground based remote sensing instruments. The second phase took place in the UK in September 2004 and used both the Proteus and the FAAM BAE 146 aircrafts based at Cranfield.

* Availability of data

The EAQUATE archive maintained at the BADC will include the following

The FAAM data include both core and non-core data (for a definition of core data, see the document on FAAM Instruments).

* Access to data

Data, documentation and software supplied to the BADC by the project team are stored in the BADC EAQUATE archive, from where they can be viewed and downloaded by authorised users.

* Data format - File names

EAQUATE data are stored in either NetCDF or NASA Ames format. File names follow the BADC file name convention and (for FAAM data) the FAAM file name convention.

* Instructions to data providers

Data file names. Data providers are kindly requested to follow the BADC file name convention. Additional rules apply to FAAM file names.
  • Note that the first component of the file name is the instrument (or group of instruments, or model) name. A list of standard instrument/model names, including the FAAM instruments, is available. Please advise the BADC if you can't find your instrument or model in the list, or if you would like to record data from several instruments in a single file, so that we can update the list (in agreement with the FAAM board if it is an instrument or a group of instruments flying on the FAAM aircraft).
  • The second component of file names (the location/platform) must be faam in the case of data collected onboard the FAAM aircraft.
    Data file format. Please format your data in NetCDF, using the CF metadata conventions. NASA Ames formatted files are also accepted. If you wish to check that files are correctly formatted before uploading them please use the NetCDF format checker or the BADC NASA-Ames format checker. Many data files contain the variable time which can be expressed in several ways. Guidelines on the recommended format of the time-variable header lines, units and the data values in Nasa-Ames files are available and are based on the format used in NetCDF.
    Metadata. It is important that the data be well documented. Please follow the BADC guidelines regarding the submission of metadata.
    Data file submission. In order to upload data files to the BADC, you need to be registered with the relevant group - see "Access to data" section above).
  • FAAM core data: via the FAAM web uploader (access restricted to registered FAAM instrument operators).
  • All other data data: via the EAQUATE web uploader (access restricted to registered EAQUATE participants). Large amounts of data can also be submitted by ftp (please contact the BADC help desk for further information).
