IntroductionThese pages describe the COAPEC (Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Processes and European Climate) dataset at the BADC. COAPEC is a NERC thematic programme designed to examine the variability of the Earth's climate. Interactions between the oceans and the atmosphere play a major role in governing this variability. The goal of COAPEC is to determine the impact on climate, especially European climate, of the coupling between the Atlantic Ocean and the atmosphere, including the influence of ENSO on this coupling.
These data cover a period of 1000 years (1849 - 2849), and contains all atmospheric and oceanic fields derived from the HadCM3 model.
What's New?A new addition to the data archive are 50 years (1950-2000) of MOM (GFDL Modular Ocean Model) data.
The COAPEC Workspace at the BADC is available for further information and discussion of COAPEC issues.
Most of the 1000 years (1849-2849) of model data for selected parameters has been retrieved from the Met Office. These now belong to the BADC archive. A report summarising the current status of these retrieved files has been placed in the Meeting Reports section of the COAPEC workspace.
Restricted dataAccess to COAPEC data at the BADC is initially restricted to those researchers directly involved with the COAPEC programme. The online application for access to the COAPEC data includes the Met Office Agreement to be electronically accepted. You will then be given access to these datasets via a Web account. Details of your account will be sent by e-mail.
Access
to dataThe 1000 yr COAPEC dataset is stored as daily binary files. At the moment, these files are in PP format, although utilities are now available from the BADC to access and convert these into several other formats such as NetCDF. The MOM data are gzipped NetCDF files.
Please Note:
It is possible to extract a just a subset of each PP file (if this is all that is required) if you have an account on login.badc.rl.ac.uk, using the convsh utility. It is straigtforward to set up a simple convsh script to process a PP file and store the output in your home directory. These data may then be ftp'd back to your local machine for analysis. Documentation for convsh is available, as well as some example scripts to illustrate how it should be used.
DocumentationFurther information about COAPEC data is available from the links below.

Who
to ContactGeneral queries about these pages and access to the data should
be directed to the BADC support line.
Your query should be answered within one working day. When follow-up
work is required, the BADC support will carry out the work as
quickly and efficiently as possible, and in any case, the user
will be kept informed of progress.
