What are collaborative workspaces?
The collaborative workspaces at the BADC use a software system called BSCW. This allows members to share documents and URLs, have discussions, contact other members of the workspace and maintain a group calendar.
Members can also be notified by e-mail when new items have been posted in the workspace, either via a 'daily report' or an immediate message.
How do I become a member of a workspace?
In order to become a workspace member you first need to be a registered BADC user. Once you have done that, please contact BADC support to request membership of a workspace. We will confirm your eligibility with the owner of the workspace before giving you access.
Can I start a new workspace?
Unfortunately, we no longer support the BSCW workspace system and are phasing it out. There are however various file share hosting services available on the internet that may suit the need of your groups. How to I log into a BSCW workspace
Either use one of the links on the list of workspaces or else log into your "home" directory using one of the following links:
Any workspaces you belong to will appear as folders within your home directory.
How can I receive e-mail notification of changes to the workspace?
There are two types of e-mail notification: daily report and direct notification. The daily report is an e-mail which is sent out no more than once per day giving details of any changes made during the day. If no changes have been made then no e-mail is sent. Direct notification sends an e-mail as soon as a change has been made.Your default e-mail notification settings are controlled from your Default Event Configuration page. This can be found by selecting Options->DefaultEvents from the Options menu at the top of the page (see below)

The settings on this page apply to all items in all workspaces you are a member of. The relevant columns on this page are DailyReport and DirectEmail. The first row of the table, labelled 'activated' must be selected in order for the notification to be switched on. The other rows are labelled 'Read events', 'Create events', 'Move events' and 'Change events'. 'Read' events are generated when a user views an item in the workspace, 'Create' events are generated when a new item is added to a workspace, 'Move' events are generated if an item is moved into a new location and 'Change' events are generated if a change is made to an item (for example, if a new version of a document is added). Note that new users being added to a workspace is reported as a 'Change'.
To switch on notification, select 'activated' and select one or more event types to be notified of then press 'OK'. You can switch off notification by simply deselecting the appropriate 'activated' checkbox.
If required, you can overide the default settings for particular folders or items. This allows you to receive notification only for particular files or folders. In order to do this the appropriate notification mechanism must be marked as 'activated' in your default event configuration (see above). Once you have done this go to the object or folder, click on the arrow (
) to the right of the object to bring up the 'action' menu and select 'events'. This brings up a table similar to your Default Event Configuration page. Select the appropriate notification options and click on 'Ok'.
By default, notification e-mails are delivered in both text and HTML format. If you wish to change the format, select Options->Preferences from the menu at the top of the page, change 'Format of email messages' to the appropriate value and press 'OK'.
