The British Atmospheric Data Centre (BADC) and NERC Earth Observation Data Centre (NEODC) are the designated NERC data centres for the UK atmospheric and earth observation communities. As such they are responsible for the long term archiving of research data produced by NERC funded atmospheric and earth observation academic research.
The BADC and NEODC are run on behalf of NERC by the Centre for Environmental Data Archival (CEDA) at STFC's Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, in Oxfordshire.
To ensure that CEDA can provide these facilities effectively, timely and accurate information on projects likely to produce archivable data is required by the data centres.
Within the NERC there are a number of modes under which applications can be submitted, each of which has differing requirements for data management provision within the grant proposal. Details of what is recommended practice for each of these modes in relation to details of data management provision is given below :
| Funding Mode | Recommended data management details for proposal |
| Directed Mode/Research Programmes | For large programmes no data management provision needs to be presented within the proposal as this will be covered by a Data Management Plan (DMP) between the designated data centre and the steering committee for the entire Directed Mode Programme. However, smaller research programmes can require projects to make contact with the data centre at the proposal stage in the same way as consortium grants. Please refer to the NERC Announcement of Opportunity for the individual programme requirements. |
| Consortium | Contact with the appropriate NERC data centre should be made prior to bid submission. For the NEODC and BADC please complete and return the questionnaire below. A member of CEDA staff's science support team will then contact you with data management costings. Within the application it is sufficient to note that contact with the data centre has been made and to quote the data management figure. This cost should not be given in the directly incurred costs within the application. Details within the questionnaire will be used to prepare a DMP should the application be successful. |
| Responsive and Other mode | In all other cases the appropriate NERC Data Centre should be contacted for data management costings to be prepared. For the NEODC and BADC please complete the questionnaire below, return and a member of CEDAs science support team will contact you with data management costings. These should be formally part of the application, listed as a "directly incurred cost", with the quote from CEDA provided as evidence for the quoted figure(s). If successful, the details within the questionnaire will form a basis for a DMP. |

All NERC grants If you have applied or are about to apply for a NERC grant, please tick the Facilities section in the NERC Je-S system (Joint electronic Submission Portal for the Research Councils' Electronic Grant Services) and select NERC Supported Data Centres. It is advised to include any relevant information, such as an estimated data management budget, to support your proposal. Until the submission due date project proposals can be updated in the NERC Je-S system. |
Project Proposal Data Management Questionnaire
A member of the CEDA science support team will then contact you to discuss further details (if required) and provide you with a quote for data management (this may involve some preliminary scoping study if your project includes a large number of partners). NERC funded projects that require relatively little data management support (up to 1k) will not be charged. Budgets are calculated based on STFC pay rates for staff costs and, for significant amounts of data, on current storage costs. Exception |
