New Project Proposals
N.B. This page is the draft of what is intended to become an online form.
In the meantime, it can be used as a questionnaire.
Please send your answers to the BADC helpdesk
with "New project proposal" in the Subject box, and if possible attach
any existing project proposal description.
If you intend to use the BADC as an archive and distribution centre for your data,
or if you would like to investigate this possibility, please fill in and submit
the following questionnaire.
A member of the BADC staff will contact you to discuss further details and provide
you with a quote (this may involve some preliminary scoping study if your project
includes a large number of partners).
NERC funded projects that require relatively little data management support
(< or = £1k) will not be charged.
Budgets are calculated based on CCLRC pay rates for staff costs and, for
significant amounts of data, on current storage costs, then submitted to your
approval.
Exception
This form must not be submitted by PIs of projects funded through a NERC Directed
Mode Research Programme, for which data management arrangements are made directly
with the relevant Programme steering committees.

NERC grants
If you have applied or are about to apply for a NERC grant, please tick the
Facilities section in the
NERC
Je-S
system (Joint electronic Submission Portal for the Research Councils' Electronic
Grant Services) and select NERC Supported Data Centres.
In addition, it is advised to include any relevant information if possible,
including an estimated data management budget, to be discussed first with the BADC
in the case for support attached to your proposal.
Until their submission due date, project proposals can be updated in the NERC Je-S
system.
Please answer this questionnaire as well.

Are you registered with the BADC? Y/N
If not, you may wish to register
here.
Please fill in one form per project involving the recourse to the BADC
this can involve data from many different sources and partners from
many institutions.
Skip the questions that are not relevant to your case or state why they are
not relevant.
Where answers are not known, reply by a question mark.
If detailed answers would be excessively lengthy, please provide a generic
answer but, in general, please be as specific as possible.

To another agency? Which one(s)?

If known, please state start and end dates.
- If the project includes field campaigns, please state the start and end
dates of those, and whether these are tentative or definite dates.
- Brief description of your project.
- Use of NERC or other facilities.
Have you applied or do you plan to apply for the use of any NERC facility listed below?
-
The FAAM (Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements) aircraft.
-
The ARSF (Airborne Research and Survey Facility) aircraft.
-
UFAM
(Universities Facility for Atmospheric Measurement) instruments which ones?
-
The MST (Mesosphere-Stratosphere-Troposphere) radar.
-
Other please specify.
Will you make use of one of the following?
-
The CFARR
(Chilbolton Facility for Atmospheric and Radio research).
-
Other please specify.
- The data that will be generated by the project.
- Will your project involve any, some or all of the following activities?
Which one(s)?
- Lab studies.
- Instrument development.
- New in situ or remote-sensed measurements.
- Observation and/or model data comparison.
- Compilation or synthesis of existing measurements (*).
- Model development (*).
- Model computation (*).
- Combination of existing observations and model runs (e.g. data assimilation) (*).
- Other (???).
- Instruments and/or models used.
Please give full generic names of instruments as well as abbreviations or
shortnames and, if useful, brand and model codes.
For models, give the general type of model (e.g. Lagrangian air dispersion
model) as well as their full name, acronym and source (e.g.
Numerical Atmospheric dispersion Modeling Environment (NAME III) from the UK Met
Office).
- For each instrument or group of instruments or model above, please state the following.
- Will the project generate several data processing stages (from raw to processed)
or versions?
- Variables to be recorded (measured, derived, assembled or computed).
Please list their CF standard names or signal the ones that do not have a CF standard name (****).
- Principal responsible person or team (+ contact).
- Spatial grid, space and time resolution and domains.
- Number and specifications of model runs.
- Locations of observation stations.
Names of simulated sites.
- Nature and names of ambulatory platforms (e.g. van, ship, aircraft, satellite, etc.).
- Volume of data expected.
- Archival policy.
- Do you estimate that a part of your data is not worth archiving? (Which one? Why?)
- Will you maintain an archive of (part of) your data yourself? (**) (***)
- Data exchanges within the project.
(This can be provided as a time-chart).
-
Which teams will provide which data?
-
Which team will need data from which other team, and at which stage of the project development?
- Data format.
In principle, it is required that the submitted data
(at least the fully processed one) be formatted in
NetCDF (binary) or
NASA Ames (ASCII),
which are both supported by the BADC.
However, an exception can be made if you have a strong reason to adopt another well
documented format allowing the inclusion of standard metadata typically, the
common use within your community, or the history attached to the data (e.g. PP format
for UM output).
Will your data use one of the following formats (if both, please say which dataset(s)
will use which format).
- NetCDF? Y/N
- NASA Ames? Y/N
- None of the above? (Please state which format and why).
- Don't know yet.
- Conditions of access and use.
- Should access to data from your project be restricted to the project participants
for some "retention" period? (**) Y/N
- If so, how long should this period of time be and from when?
(E.g. one year following the project end).
- Should priviledged external collaborators be granted access to the data during
the retention period? Y/N
- Would you like some condition of use to bind the data user? Y/N
(E.g. offer of co-authorship to the data originator in case of publication based on
the data, or due acknowledgement in such publications).
- If so, should this condition only apply for a limited amount of time (e.g. the
retention period) or should it continue to apply after the data have been released
to the public domain?
-

-
If known, please state where such data are (or will be) held.
-
Can the BADC try to help fetching these data for you?
-
If known, volume of third-party data needed.
-
Would a
BSCW
project workspace be helpful?
- Other services.
Could the BADC help in any other way?
- AOB.
Any data issue this questionnaire does not cover?
- Attachments.
Please attach any useful document (e.g. your project proposal).
(*) Please be aware that the BADC has a
Simulation Data Policy
applying to model and synthesis data.
(**)
In accordance to the
Freedom of
Information Act 2000 and the
Environmental
Information Regulations 2004, data in the UK may not be withheld from the
public domain for longer than a realistic "work in progress" time period.
(***) If not maintained at a NERC data centre, data issued from NERC funded
research must be documented at a NERC DC.
Therefore, a complete set of metadata and directions on how to access the data
must be provided to the dedicated NERC DC.
(****) Please refer to the
table of CF standard names.
