  Environmental Directions summarises the results of extensive consultation
  between the Natural Environmental Research Council and its scientific
  and user communities. The introduction sets the scene by identifying
  six environmental and natural resource issues. The scientific challenges 
  reflect the views of the NERC scientific community on the exciting
  areas of their science for the next five to ten years. The views of 
  NERC's diverse user community are reflected in the Environmental 
  Foresight Topics: Technological opportunities and markets that will grow 
  or emerge in the next 10-20 years. These elements can be linked together
  to show how exciting basic science will ultimately contribute to
